Hands-On Preservation and Public Enrichment
At the Association des Amis de la Chapelle Notre Dame de Montgauzy, cultural preservation is an active, communal discipline. Our 2026 operational program integrates scientific stonemasonry interventions, intergenerational workshops, academic lectures, and participatory civic assemblies into a coherent public schedule. All activities are 100% free of charge and open to all citizens, residents, and heritage enthusiasts.
Historical Discovery & Architectural Guided Walks
Throughout the spring, summer, and autumn of 2026, our certified volunteer historians conduct immersive guided discovery walks exploring the architectural and geological mysteries of Montgauzy. Participants trace the medieval footpaths leading up from the historic center of Foix, discovering how ancient quarrymen extracted local limestone, how monastic architects calculated the thrust of barrel vaults, and how local religious traditions evolved across nine centuries.
These walks are curated to be intellectually rigorous yet thoroughly accessible to lay audiences, families with school-aged children, and senior citizens. Rather than rote recitations of dates, our docents explain the living history of construction: deciphering stone-cutter marks (marques de tâcheron) etched into the limestone blocks, identifying original twelfth-century mortar joint profiles, and highlighting surviving traces of medieval ironwork.

Participatory Volunteer Fieldwork & Conservation Camps
Real conservation requires sustained manual care. Our recurring volunteer fieldwork days allow motivated community members to contribute directly to the physical preservation of the monument. Under the direct on-site guidance of experienced stonemasons, volunteers engage in non-structural safeguarding operations that keep the monument healthy.
Key fieldwork activities include clearing micro-vegetation from foundation masonry, extracting destructive ivy roots without damaging lime mortar, repairing traditional dry-stone hillside terraces, cataloguing loose architectural fragments, and assisting master artisans in preparing pure hydraulic lime paste according to historical formulas.
All safety equipment, gloves, protective eyewear, and specialized hand tools are provided without cost by the association. No previous experience in construction or masonry is required; our training team ensures every volunteer learns proper safety procedures and historical masonry ethics before lifting a trowel.
Frequency: First & Third Saturdays of each month (9:00 AM – 1:00 PM)

Town-Hall Civic Assemblies & Heritage Conferences
Transparency and democratic debate are the lifeblood of our organization. Twice annually, the association convenes broad public assemblies in Foix, inviting residents, local historians, municipal representatives, and regional cultural officers to discuss the ongoing progress of conservation works and review future restoration proposals.
These assemblies feature presentations by invited guest lecturers, including medieval art historians, archaeometrists, and stone conservators. Attendees examine high-resolution diagnostic imagery, 3D laser-scan renderings of interior vaults, and comparative analyses of Romanesque sites across the Pyrenean corridor.
Every attendee is given the floor during our open question-and-answer period. We believe that public infrastructure decisions must be informed by genuine civic dialogue. Whether discussing traffic calming along the access lane, seasonal opening hours, or archaeological test trenches, our assemblies ensure that community voices actively shape our institutional direction.

Educational Exhibitions & School Outreach Initiatives
Igniting cultural curiosity in the next generation is essential to long-term monument protection. Our educational department collaborates directly with primary and secondary schools across the Ariège academy, designing pedagogical modules tailored to national curricula in history, geography, and visual arts.
During school visits, pupils engage in tactile learning: experimenting with wooden arch building blocks to understand vaulted gravity distribution, testing the acidity of rainwater on different rock specimens, and examining illuminated manuscript reproductions that record the medieval history of Foix.
In addition to school groups, we host traveling informational exhibitions in community libraries, cultural centers, and rural town halls throughout Occitanie. These portable displays feature high-resolution photographic banners, 3D architectural models, and audio guides available in French and English.
